Still, it seems abnormal and quite surprised for Cambodian people to adopt lesbians. Thus, there are not many lesbians dare to show up themselves independently. And the rest are supposed to hide their identified because of the family and society gates.

“Being a lesbian is not the wish but it comes naturally.” Nhen Sombo said. In the aged 31, Sombo realized herself lesbian since she was a child and she was not able to change that though there was so much pressure. “I do not love man; still, I am an ordinary person as the others.” Sombo added.

There are notable reasons caused women change their perspective from loving men to women. Some women of course are interested in people who have the same sex rather than men naturally. Nonetheless, the other girls turn to pay attention to girls since they have had bad experiences with guys. Those may be cheated by their boyfriends. Or, they might used to face to violence which conducted by the man.

In the aged of 20, Jessica, who did ask not to reveal the real name; explained that she used to have many boyfriends but those guys usually make her pain. In contrast, lesbian are much more understand her feeling and always tread her warm.

“Before, I did not think I like homosexual people. But, after spending time with them especially lesbian, I found that they are quite warm. They care and understand me even little stuff while my boyfriends have never done at all.” Jessica confirmed. “Moreover, lesbian mostly does not need sex while man tends to ask for it from me.”

In addition, being a university student, Sothearoth, 22, could not recognize herself whether she is lesbian or not. And, she dares not to say out. But, what her emotion is she feels negative with men since her father did the domestic violence and left family.

“I don’t like men. They are irresponsible. They love to make women hurt and keep control on women while they themselves have many lovers.” “Honestly, I almost dare not to love men but I don’t think I am lesbian.”

However, being a lesbian faces to many challenges. First of all, the family is basic circumstance. And then, society which started from neighbor and working environment may abandon them. For instance, Sombo left home because she committed to be a lesbian. Then, in 1997 she applied as a worker in a garment factory in Phnom Penh, she was denied to employ since her appearance looked like a boy.

“I did feel isolated at that time, but I have never given up. It was actually hard at the beginning. However, now it seems release or I may get used to social discrimination. Currently, I am a security guard.”

To form the homosexual voice in the society in the purpose of reducing the social discrimination, Women’s Network for Unity (WNU) and Rainbow Community Kampuchea (ROCK) are working openly with gay and lesbian. Those two NGOs encourage homosexual people to show up themselves.

Noy Sitha, a volunteer in ROCK explained “ROCK plans to work with the homosexual people in the whole kingdom but now we reach 14 places including city and provinces. Our staff and volunteer are homosexual people. Actually, we form this for asking to have a legal and social acceptance. I believe homosexual remain since the past, but the point is that they were not brave enough to express themselves. Lesbian or gay are people. It is their freedom and personal decision to have happiness in their lives. Meanwhile, we also educate those lesbian and gay to be a normal people if they can. But, if they cannot change, ROCK and WNU still stay by them sides.”

On top of that, Somchan Sovandara, a Deputy Head of psychology department at Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) commented that though there is no any specific research about lesbian or human gene of being a homosexual. Anyway, from his point of view, lesbian is increasing in Cambodian society comparing to the last decade.

“I figured out that lesbians started to increase while foreign cultures come to Cambodia. And some people are easy to adopt the foreign concept. In fact in 1993 while UNTAX arrived this country, Cambodia did change a lot in term of culture and stuffs. Also, another reason is that some men are not honest. They cheat women which making women broken heart. As a result, women glance to concentrate on women instant of guy.” Sovandara said,

However, Sor Samnang, a lecturer in a university in Phnom Penh commented about lesbian that being a lesbian do not only put family reputation down but also Cambodian culture.

“I would say they are spoiling their future and family reputation. If they show up themselves as lesbians, how their families keep standstill with the relatives and society. And how about their future career are gonna be.” Samnang mentioned, “especially, Cambodian culture has men love women, neither men love men, nor women love women. This is able to cause other foreign countries look down on our high and nice culture, tradition and civilization.”

To response with Samnang’s remark, Jessica clarified that “Before, I was scary with the eyes of people while they looked at me in the discriminate way though I did nothing wrong on them, just I am a lesbian. But at this instant, I stop caring about this at all. I love the way I am. Why I can’t choose my life to reach my happiness. Frankly, I don’t know why my life is going to end. Thus, I just want to spend with the time I have less to do what I really want to I am not begging for anyone interest, I am not calling anything, I did it because I want to.”

Last but no mean least, Sitha ended “Since women and women could not have sex like women and men, there are not that serious disease happen, for instance, sexually transmitted disease (STD) or HIV/AIDs. As a result, we hope the government will give a legal marriage to homosexual people as the ordinary people. And parents who have homosexual children would accept their nature. It is not all what they want to but it is destiny, no any force.”

<georss:box>11.440472999999999 104.83148550000004 11.677189 105.00340450000004</georss:box>

Community project reflex from my exchange program this Jul

Chiang Mai- It was the 8th day of my training in Thailand. Nevertheless, today, it turned out to a worst day ever I had during my time participating in this course. I actually felt I have caught a cold for a couple of days already but I just expected that I would be able to recover it soon since it was not a serious deal.

Unexpectedly, today was the worst ever. I got a very terrible cough for the whole day. I could not concentrate on my class; especially, the Movie class which I was absolutely interested in and it also was the one I completely have never learnt before.

What is more, my video’s group was supposed to go out for researching and interviewing the topic. We (my group’s member) all were about to go. Still, I immediately refused to leave since I did not think I felt well enough. I guessed I make the team disappointed since I did not fully participate.

On the other hand, they understood and kind to me a lot. They all treaded me so nice and warm. I was allowed to rest and some of my friends in the camp gave me pills. After taking medicine and relaxing, I feel touched. I just slept while the band was running. I was really guilty. I frankly wished I was complained rather getting care from everyone.

Unique Sunday night market in Chiang Mai

<m:smallfrac m:val="off"> <m:dispdef> <m:lmargin m:val="0"> <m:rmargin m:val="0"> <m:defjc m:val="centerGroup"> <m:wrapindent m:val="1440"> <m:intlim m:val="subSup"> <m:narylim m:val="undOvr"> </m:narylim></m:intlim> </m:wrapindent> </m:defjc></m:rmargin></m:lmargin></m:dispdef></m:smallfrac>

Creative and artistic stuff in Sunday night market

Chiang Mai- Different from any other markets in Chiang Mai, Sunday Night market which is available only in Sunday is the most popular place where provides every single person especially tourists observing many artistic and cultural stuffs of the Thai’s Northern part.

The market crowed from the late evening until the midnight. It seemed the Khmer Water festival in Phnom Penh city, Cambodia. Anyway, Sunday market’s road was separated into two directions for going straight and back. In the middle of that long road, there were different kind of people such as old man, little girl, and even handicap people performing their talents. Some sing, play traditional Thai’s dam, violin, and guitar to get donations from the passengers going around. Also, we could figure out the Thai’s typical food nearly be. Last and most important point is that you are able to see the way of Thai’s people put their religious into practice since there were a couple of temples (pagodas) there. It might not be the same as Buddhism you esteem in your home country.

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; I did not know where to go and even what to do, just a little girl. Nevertheless, everyday my surrounding people inspired me by their personal habits especially my father. He loved listening to the radio so much. He turned it on almost every second all the day long. Therefore, every night, I always heard the daily news, fairy-tale, songs, and so on. Then, I automatically adapted to love radio by chance.

After I turned to 16 year-old, I got a part time job as a radio presenter unexpectedly. Actually, I did know nothing at that time beside my studied. However, since I used to listen to radio such a long period of time by my father and having such a talkative talent, I was able to run the show smoothly.

Later than a few months of being in the radio station, I figured out that I love media career in the way that it played the main role in society changing peacefully. Also, one of my producers performed really well in her work as a media practitioner. She showed me the Media’s value nowadays in my country as well as the world; particularly, she taught me the way of having a critical thinking. Thus, from that on, I built up my mind keeping her as my idol. Then, I committed myself to be a media person someday.

In this moment, some parts of my dream succeed in this field. I got the abroad exchange programs, international media conference, etc. Last but not least, I strongly believe that media’s field is very fit to me. What I am supposed to do right away is that keep improving myself, and then make the positive change for my community’s development.

This is the article that I was supposed to write as my first homework when I join Effective Communication Training in Chiang Mai, Thailand 2011.

What's new? Do you ever get even a little annoyed at them? If so, imagine having to deal with 50 small children every day!

This is just part of the job for Men Ponleu, 25, who has been working as a pre-school teacher at Sovannaphumi School and Newtown Thilay School for more than six years.

“Kids are innocent and cute,” Ponleu says, “but being their teacher is not such an easy task.”

Ponleu has to work seven hours a day, most of which she spends speaking, lecturing and reprimanding. Her classes go from morning till evening, and Ponleu says she used to get a serious sore throat for days at a time.

Despite this, she said in an interview that she loved her work and had never thought of giving it up.

“Even though the kids never sit still and the job made me tired every day and sick from time to time, it has become part of my life,” Ponleu says.

“Sometimes I feel bored when I have a long break over New Year or the Pchom Ben ceremony because I miss my tiny students so much.”

Ponleu also says: “Working in this field was my father’s wish for me. He always wanted one of his children to become a teacher.”

From Ponleu’s point of view, the job provides a lot of pressure and many challenges. None the less, she is obliged to be very patient, caring, and creative.

For instance, students will often make a noise in class, so she has to use all her energy and creativity to keep them engaged in what she is teaching.

Sometimes she will create a funny rule, like when a child is being noisy they have put a hand on their shoulder and close their mouth. But those techniques are usually effective for only 5 to 10 minutes.

Moreover, most of the kids love to play and run around as fast as they can. Accidents are bound to happen, but they’re usually not serious. Still, Ponleu must take responsibility for the children and sometimes deal with complaints from their parents.

Care and patience are necessary to smooth over the challenges of her profession.

Since my experience volunteering as a temporary kindergarten teacher in Sweden, a northern European country, I’ve understood how difficult, but how rewarding, being a teacher can be.

From my observations, it seems the pre-schoool education system in our country is getting better and better, as all teachers are trained in theory and practice before being allowed to teach.

Also, students increasingly have all the necessary school supplies and foreign teachers are brought in to teach pre-school kids.

Ponleu concluded with a smile, saying: “I strongly believe our country will develop more and more because of the emphasis on educating young children like my students. And I keep doing my part to help that process along.”

http://www.phnompenhpost.com/index.php/2011062249916/LIFT/a-day-in-the-life-of-a-private-kindergarten-teacher.html

Youth of the week

<m:smallfrac m:val="off"> Nevertheless, since she has involved to every exchange she got, it automatically changes her completely to another person. “I did feel nervous and uncomfortable whenever I was asked to talk to my teacher. On the contrary, after I have involved in many activities in the society, I have changed my manner almost all. It is the same as the flowers was pure by the water!!! I do know that our life is really meaningful!!!!” she explained.

Panha currently is a senior in major of Financial and Banking at Royal University of Laws and Economics (RULE) and a year two of English literature student at Institute of Foreign Languages (IFL). After becoming a scout for about 2 years, Panha first packed her suitcase to abroad in aged 15. “It was great and amazing. I of course feel some kind of worries but if I didn’t let her go, so when she can go.” Mr. TEP Saril, Panha’s father said. “She was actually really little but I strongly believed in her.” Panha, in 2005, went to Thailand for attending in the Neighboring Country Youth Camp and the 25th Asia Pacific Scout Jamboree for 15 days. Secondly, in 2007 she joined the ASEAN Youth Development Exchange Program in India. Then in Vietnam; she attended in the Cambodia-Vietnam Youth meeting in 2008. And Malaysia in 2009, she participated in the Malaysia Technical Cooperation Program. Lastly, 2010 she attended both the International Youth Development Exchange Program in Japan and the 3rd ASEAN scout Jamboree in Singapore.

Panha claimed that she could catch these opportunities by the information from Youth Department, and also some from her friends who used to attended in those programs. Social-network is extremely important; however, her parents’ emotional support was also a part of her achievements. “Anyway, it is not so easy to handle two majors at the same time; specifically, when I got missions to each country. For sure, I always need to ask for permission from both schools. And after I got back I tried so hard to study. I spent more times on my study and kept asking my mates in some case, I did not understand.” She added.

After adapting the development concept for her experience, in the future, Panha tends to work for either international or local Non-governmental Organization whichever can improve the ability of youth in Cambodia. It is not so easy to paint such those pictures, which Miss. Yim Maline tries her best to draw with many such arts materials. After hearing about this solo exhibition Remember that will have been exhibiting almost one month from 7 April till 8 May, I decided to go Sa Sa Basac to see them maybe an hour.

As I know, exhibition has two artists, Yim Maline and Amy Lee Sanford (Nee` Ly Sandari), who is a Cambodia-American artist.

Yim Maline was born in Battambang province but at present she is living in Siem Reap. She also studied arts at Phare Poleu Selabak since 1995 till 2003. Maline has joint a number of exhibitions in France and Cambodia. Solo exhibition Remember is the first exhibition of Yim Maline.

I went there with friends. When we showed up there, we saw the most interesting one is that New Face (2010) is a collection of nine rough plaster masks attached to the wall.

Unlike, one of my friends was not fascinated in those nine faces at all. She seemed falling in love with customary kite named Khleng Ek is built of ceramic that seems a bit strange from other kite made of long-lasting materials of paper or silk. Khleng Ek is a four-meter-long sculpture of a kite entitled Hope. And Khleng Ek-making and flying was dominated in Khmer Rouge era, so after that period gone Khleng Ek become in common.

After spending around 10 minutes there, I was startled by Denitte (2010) is a sprawling floor installation of dirt scattered with three hand-built, unglazed ceramic objects in series: Knives, bowls, and bone-like shapes. At that time, I did not know what they are but perhaps 5 minutes more I knew.

When I was in Sa Sa Basac gallery, I did not talk to any artists because people there were so rush with their chatting each other. I just talked to Khmer traditional dancing trainer, Mrs. Sophiline Cheam Shapiro, who is Artistic director of Khmer Arts organization located in Preak Hou district, Kandal province.

After Mrs. Sophiline said good bye to me, I could spend much time to look at those of paintings hanged on the wall. Though those pictures are very good, I still do not understand much what they look like as I do not dear to assure that they are too artistic to comprehend or I might too young to understand.

Right away, I stretched out press release of Sa Sa Basac to see those picture’s meaning, so I knew that they talked about Scar 1-4 (2010) is a series of meticulous graphite-on-paper drawings in which the artist has imagined explorations of organically shaped rice clusters, which relevant to our country known as agricultural country like others in Asia.

While I was obsessing with those Scars paintings, I did not care much of people around me. Suddenly, one of my friends poked me to shoot some souvenir pictures because maybe she thought that we have never ever participated in such event, so she shot a lot.

To me, I just looked around, seeing plenty of people handling their own professional cameras but they seemed so sleepy to take photos. That’s why I just shot Yim Maline’s achievements mainly Khleng Ek and New Face not participants.

Probably, 7: 30 my friends told me to say good bye to Sa Sa Basac’s founders and other audiences since we had to come back and sky was getting darker and darker. And we determined that if Sa Sa Basac has such this exhibition, we will definitely come together once again to see such those great done.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://banung-ou.blogspot.com/2011/06/whats-new-remember-of-yim-maline.html' title='What’s new? HEM Sopheaktra, who has worked both DJ (disc jockey) and operator for almost 10 years at Women Media’s center of Cambodia (WMC), was talking to his caller when I arrived there.

At the beginning, Sopheaktra felt some kind of nervous after I introduced myself, “It is fine for guests to visit here but I honestly just feel a bit anxious for getting interview.” he said with smiled. He talked to me when he played the song for the listeners and I observed him during he spoke with caller and found disc to play. I saw directly that Sopheaktra could remember all songs in every CD very well and was able to find where the CD located professionally. “Being a DJ is not that difficult but being a popular one is the point. It depends on how flexible and how fast you are.” Sopheaktra added, “I got the first rank among other DJ who is the most popular. The judges were audiences, donor or sponsors and people who worked in broadcasting field.”

Difference from others occupations that require staff to work for 8 hour per day, Sopheaktra generally just needed to take responsibility for about 5 hours only in a day in his workplace. Nonetheless, during that time he hardly got any break unless he already prepared the record or someone came to replace him. “I cannot get out of the studio because my listeners are listening, also my boss and her networks. I would get complained if there has problem on air.” He explained, “However, I would call my colleague to stand by instant of me or else, I might set-up some songs to play when I was a way (like in the toilet or have some snack) but I must carry a radio along with since I would be able to control on time if there has any changes or error in the live room.”

Moreover, Sopheaktra claimed that this job required him to think a lot. At the same, I saw him chatting with callers, finding songs and managing with the mixer. Amazingly, he could remember almost all his callers even they came from different location in the country. Though I am younger than Sopheaktra but I would say it is impossible for me to remember every name.

Some people expected that being either a DJ or an operator was enjoyable since those looked very happy; nevertheless, sometimes this DJ did not get any fun from his job at all. “It was actually boring when I had personal matters or got blame from my boss. So, I wanted to be alone and get no any noise but this work forced me to talk and talk.” Sopheaktra ended, “It is my basic job anyway.”

A day in life of IT person, doctor of computer virus.

Vong Oun, a systems admin assistant at the Phnom Penh Post’s office has a confident outlook. “Whatever a man can do, I also can do,” she says.

The information technology (IT) field is considered to be dominated by males, and it is unusual in Cambodia to see a female keen to become an expert in this field. Nevertheless, at the age of 22, Vong Oun, also known as Srey Oun, is studying for a bachelor’s degree in IT at Puthisastra University and is the youngest IT staff member at the Phnom Penh Post.

Srey Oun honestly has had doubts about her major since she found out that the IT field does not offer such broad opportunities for women to get jobs. The thinking is that an IT career is more suited to men.

“After I graduated from high school, I got a two-year scholarship to study IT at the Center for Information System Training (CIST). Besides, I truthfully did not know what IT was really about, although I attended an orientation day before I had to make a decision,” she said.

“I thought it might not be so easy to get a job in this profession, in view of the fact that it was prioritised so much towards men.”

Happily, after more than a year working in this field, Srey Oun is much more satisfied and enjoys what she is doing.

As a result, every day of her working life she is required to walk around the floor giving IT assistance to other staff members in different departments who get stuck with connecting to networks, printing, errors in the system and many other kinds of IT problems.

Rarely does she stay by her desk. If someone needs her help, they will give her a phone call or reach her directly. Sometimes, when people are in a rush to fix their computer problem, she can be found anywhere in the building.

Being an IT controller means Srey Oun has to be creative and flexible, because the lessons she has learnt in class do not not always prepare her for the daily challenges she faces on the job.

“Different computers have different problems, so I’m required to be more inventive. For example, if a virus crashes a computer, I might take a couple of days to correct those problems. In contrast, if I take the hard disk out of a computer to back up onto another computer for recovering the documents, it might take less than a day,” she explained.

What I observed from spending a few hours with Srey Oun is that she doesn’t have any free time at all. According to medical studies, fat is healthy and necessary but only in small amounts. If excessive, fat can cause people to become overweight, according to Dr Ly. Moreover, people shouldn’t overload on ingredients like sugar because sweet flavours are a crucial factor in causing a chubby appearance. In the event that we cannot avoid using sugar, we can mix in small amounts only.

Diminishing weight by using weight loss pills or machines both can give effective results. For using weight loss pills, consumers should always discuss with a doctor first.

Ngorng Meng Heang, a high school student in Battambang province prefers using losing weight by an exercise machine. So far she’s lost 2.5 kilos from a starting weight of 50 kilos.

“Using weight loss drugs did not give me any results at all,” she said.

“In ten days using the machine I felt that my weight do not gain, but I also had to watch my diet, especially my fat intak,.” she said..

Dr Ly said water plays an important role in creating blood to feed their brain system – and that if water was reduced from body – it would be impossible to produce blood.

In addition, Ouk Socheata, a freshman at Cambodia International Cooperation Institute, also revesled her weight-loss method. She only ate two meals a day, breakfast and lunch, and then just drinks water in the evening – and no sweets.

“I felt exhausted and got dizzy since in my body seemed ran out of batteries,” she said.

“After dieting on meat, I was confront with stomach aches, so I decided to quit the diet to improve my condition. Otherwise, I cannot concentrate on my studies.” she explained.

As the result of giving up on the diet, Socheata gained her previous weight back by eating normal amounts – and her sense of being able to focus on her studies has returned – although her appearance is chubby.

“Before, I wanted to have a slim body which would be suitable for any clothes. Nevertheless, I dropped out of the diet since it was affecting my health. Anyway, I still plan to lose weight again but maybe with the new strategy, she said.

Businesswoman Horn Sopheakna improved her health and lost weight at the same time following her attendance of a dancing class located in Toul Kork.

“When I danced, I observed that it helped me eliminate fat because dancing brings with it good emotions, especially with rock and roll, the cha-cha and the bambo”.

Sopheakna recognized that while she earlier wanted to lose weight by taking pills, she understood the effects and opted for dance exercise instead.

“Diet pills might bring my health down, so I prefer dancing to taking pills.”

Ky Bouhang, a Khmer herbal expert at the National Health Institute, realized that Khmer herbal remedies can also help weight loss by only using Elitoria Ternatea, known in Khmer as Anh Chhann Keav.

His personal experiment with his co-workers showed that after drinking the herb for 15 to 20 days, he and his colleagues and him look and feel better. He recalled that before using this flowers, his weight was around 80 to 85 Kg but has since reduced.

“We just pick up those flowers, from 5 to 10 stems, and then we make it like tea. Remember, we have to drink as soon as possible because hot water can make our body sweat.” he added.

“As I observed, if we overdose on the herb Elitoria ternatea, the result can be a painful stomach, but the body always seems to heat up.” he said.

“I dare not to say Khmer herbal might reduce fat as we have not sent such a kind of test to the Health Department to analyze whether we got beneficial results after using kind of herbal weight-loss method.”

Doctor Ly mentioned that there are many types of weight loss drugs.

“Diet pills can either help or harm people,” Dr. Ly said.

“No one but a doctor can prescribe a weight loss program because the wrong treatment can exacerbate diseases like low blood pressure and low cholesterol if they use diet pills without medical advice first.”

Nokia lunched new version of doul phone.

Nokia X1-01

With the Nokia X1-01 you can give each SIM card its own logo, music signature or ringtone – personalization features that you can only get from Nokia!
